Manchester United coaches have made recommendation to Ineos over Willy Kambwala

An injury crisis has seen Manchester United turn to centre-back Willy Kambwala to provide a solution.

Willy Kambwala made his second senior start for Manchester United at the weekend, shining in a high-pressure contest against Liverpool.

Kambwala, 19, was picked out as man of the match by former star Rio Ferdinand, although the official United fan poll gave it to teammate Kobbie Mainoo.

After the game, manager Erik ten Hag lauded Kambwala and said that the teenage defender has earned his spot in the team.

Willy Kambwala contract

Willy Kambwala signed for Manchester United in 2020 from Sochaux. He then signed a professional contract in 2021.

The Frenchman’s current deal is set to expire in 2025. A contract extension is now likely, and has been referred to Ineos.

HITC reports Manchester United’s coaching staff have recommended to Ineos that a contract extension for Willy Kambwala is deserved.

The report states: “The 19-year-old has impressed United’s coaches and HITC is told that they have made it known to the club’s hierarchy that they should prioritise a new deal for Kambwala.”

It is entirely logical Kambwala is rewarded a new contract. He is the exact type of promising young player Manchester United should be looking to build around.

The report adds that Manchester United are ready to offer Kambwala a long-term deal.

What Willy Kambwala has said about Manchester United

Willy Kambwala is thankful for the opportunity granted to him at Manchester United, and there is no reason to expect he would not sign a new deal.

He told club media: “I’m very proud. Very grateful. Thanks, God. Thanks [to] the manager.

“Thanks, all the staff for the opportunity they gave to me today.

“I know all the players who come through the academy. I’m proud to represent this badge, this team and, hopefully, [there is] more to come together in the future.”

Despite this, United will be keen to get a deal tied up as soon as possible, and it looks like the situation is moving in the right direction.
