'I've got to admit I was disappointed in Moyes': Richard Keys is unhappy with West Ham manager

Richard Keys has just launched a properly scathing criticism of West Ham United manager David Moyes.

David Moyes guided his West Ham side to a 2-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, but Richard Keys wasn’t happy with the Scot’s post-match antics.

The Hammers desperately needed all three points at Molineux, and the result kept us in the race for the top six.

It definitely was a game of two halves, and the Hammers were so much better when they emerged from the tunnel after the half-time break.

That said, we could have drawn the game had Max Kilman’s last-minute header stood. Alas, VAR ruled it out – a decision that was roundly criticised by the footballing world, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi included.

Moyes’s stance on the situation wasn’t entirely clear though…

Moyes told O’Neill immediately after the final whistle that Kilman’s goal never should have been ruled out, but then he told the press the opposite in his post-match press conference!

And Keys lambasted the Scot for doing that, when writing his regular blog:

“There was nothing wrong with that Kilman goal. The decision was compounded when the PGMOL issued a statement trying to defend the decision. They were wrong. There was no defence. The path of the ball was not over the head of the attacker and it was well to the right of the keeper. They were adrift on a matter of law. I’ve got to admit I was a little disappointed in David Moyes’ reaction. His team have suffered a succession of bad calls recently – including one at Molineux. They too had a perfectly good goal disallowed, so why didn’t Moyes come out in support of Gary O’Neil and his team? He had nothing to lose. The game was over. It was a win/win for him had he backed O’Neil. The only way we’ll reign these refs in is if we pressure them together. Looking at that decision in the round would’ve been far more productive of Moyes.”

The decision to rule out the Wolves equaliser was an incredibly harsh one, and I would have been fuming had it happened to us.

BUT…going by the letter of the law, disallowing the Max Kilman goal was the CORRECT decision. You can argue about whether or not VAR is good for the game, but it’s there to uphold the law.

Some rules definitely need to be changed, that’s a separate argument though.

Richard Keys had a pop at David Moyes after the game, but I think his criticism of the Scot was slightly misguided.

Maybe Moyes shouldn’t have told O’Neill one thing and then the press another. However, the Hammers boss was 100% correct in saying that the Wolves goal should have been disallowed.
