American living in UK shares British slang that gives her the ick

An American living in the UK shared some of her biggest “ick” phrases and words, sparking a heated debate in the comment section.

The “ick” is a feeling you get when something unexpected instantly turns you off. The relationship term sprung up on Instagram around 2017 following comments from a contestant on the UK’s Love Island. It has since shot to new heights, with everyone revealing their most outlandish “icks” across the internet.

The British slang that gives one American the ick

American TikTok user Meg (@megsgonerogue) posted a video in 2023 that outlined a few of the British terms she just couldn’t get over. Though she admitted to finding most British flavors adorable, largely because of the accent, Meg said there were a few that need to be scrubbed from history.

The first one was “picky bits”, which Brits use to describe any food that is eaten communally or with your hands. This could include something like a cheeseboard, but also bowls of crisps and chocolates. In America, it’s commonly referred to as finger food.

“I just think it’s a really disgusting way to say like a food platter or finger food,” Meg argued.

Meg also took issue with the island nation’s love of public displays of affection. Though she had no problem with hugs, Meg said that some Brits refer to the act as “a cuddle” which is disgusting.

Coming in at number 3 was how some British people refer to goosebumps as “goose pimples”, which Meg said was completely unnecessary. Meg saved the best for last as she revealed that “some” Brits refer to “lady parts” as a “front bottom.”

Her followers suggested their own inclusions

Though most agreed with Meg’s list, there was some pushback from British commentators. Meanwhile, Meg’s American followers relished the chance to put the Brits in their place with more ick-worthy phrases and words.

One person said: “Coming from a country who calls HERBS erbs.”

“BYE NOT HER DISSING cuddle THATS NOT EVEN JUST USED BY BRITISH PEOPLE AMERICANS ALSO CALL IT THAT,” someone else ranted.

“My nan says picky bits, take it up with her. She’s pretty solid tho,” a third said, to which Meg responded with, “No shade to your nan — she can do as she pleases.”
