New FSG plans with Michael Edwards mean Liverpool will never make Rodrygo transfer mistake again - opinion

With FSG’s new plans, Liverpool will not be making the same mistake again as they once did with Rodrygo a few years ago.

Recently in an interview Real Madrid winger Rodrygo revealed that he rejected the chance to join Liverpool. The incident happened back in 2017, when Rodrygo was already a regular in Santos’ first team.

At the time, Liverpool had already identified Rodrygo as a potentially exciting young talent. However, the Brazilian rejected a move to Anfield because he was keen to continue playing regular first team football.

Rodrygo is not the first young talent to make that decision in the last few years. Liverpool have been scouting and following the best talents worldwide.

Undoubtedly, they have also approached those talents to join the club. However, for much the same reasons as Rodrygo those players have rejected Liverpool.

Including an exciting winger in January, as Rousing the Kop exclusively revealed.

Rodrygo highlights current Liverpool reality

The truth is that at the moment, unless you are an elite talent in world football, who knows you will be guaranteed to start for Liverpool a move to Anfield isn’t necessarily as appealing.

Young players want to play regular first team football. But at Liverpool they will not be guaranteed those minutes. Instead, what may happen is that initially they could likely play for the club’s U21 side or be loaned out.

However, that is an uncertain path. Especially, when other teams like Brighton or The City Group can offer concrete pathways and regular senior football at a high competitive level.

What are FSG’s new plans to change that?

As Michael Edwards confirmed when he returned to FSG, the club’s owners are looking to buy another club.

This means FSG will be adopting the multi-club model, and that means in the future, players like Rodrygo may not reject the club’s advances.

In the future, FSG will be able to offer a pathway to players and guarantee regular football by having another club at a lower level in compared to Liverpool where the young talents can be nurtured.

This will ensure all the hard work the club’s scouts put in year after year will not go to waste.
