Stansted windmill kickstarted its 2024 season with a fundraising Easter egg hunt that raised £250.
The money will go towards the 200-year-old monument’s upkeep with work set to continue to repoint the brickwork – a project that got under way in 2019, but following a wet winter has become more urgent.
Around 200 parents and children visited the mill over the Easter weekend where youngsters searched all five floors of the building to find 12 pictures of eggs. Each picture had a letter and egg hunters had to arrange them in the right order to spell ‘Easter Rabbit’.
All correct answers were drawn from a hat and six prize winners were chosen. Olivia and Ava Hyland-Hawkins’ joint effort earned them first prize of a large chocolate Easter egg and a fluffy bunny toy, donated by Tesco Express in Stansted.
Miller Richard Thomas said: “At the moment we are raising funds (and trying to get grants) to continue the re-pointing of the brickwork. That is getting more urgent now that water seepage through the walls is beginning to become evident - especially after the months of very wet weather we have had of late.
“Phase one of that project was begun in 2019. Covid disrupted the continuation, but we are now looking to start a 'phase two' in the next few weeks.”
