'I'm sorry, but...': Former PGMOL boss shares whether Harry Kane should've got a red card vs Arsenal last night

Many people think Bayern Munich star Harry Kane should’ve received a red card for his elbow on Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes last night.

The Gunners picked up a 2-2 draw against the German champions at the Emirates yesterday. Bukayo Saka‘s opener was cancelled out by Serge Gnabry before Kane scored from the spot to give Bayern the lead.

Leandro Trossard then equalised in the second half after a fantastic bit of skill from Gabriel Jesus that even impressed Kane.

There was a lot of controversy in the game last night, and one of them involved a rash decision from the Bayern Munich striker that could’ve seen him get a red card.

Former PGMOL boss on whether Harry Kane deserved a red card

Harry Kane has never received a red card in his senior career.

The Englishman isn’t the sort to dive into challenges, but he does have a history of endangering opponents during aerial duels.

That, fortunately for Arsenal‘s players, did not happen last night, but Kane did do something that could’ve and probably should’ve seen him get punished.

While trying to win a ball, Kane had a look at where Gabriel Magalhaes was and then swung an elbow at his throat. The Brazilian went down in pain.

Replays suggested that it was intentional, but the referee only gave Kane a yellow card and the VAR decided against intervening in the situation.

Former Premier League referee and head of the PGMOL Keith Hackett has now had his say on the incident, and he is convinced that Kane should’ve been sent off.

He wrote in The Telegraph: “Harry Kane can count himself a lucky boy. His swinging elbow to the face of Arsenal defender Gabriel in the 55th minute of Tuesday night’s thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg was dangerous, reckless and with excessive force.

“Kane knew exactly what he was doing, as you can tell from his glance back at Gabriel to see where his opponent was positioned. I’m sorry, but as soon as you take your eyes off the ball and play the man, you are asking for trouble.

“The elbow is a dangerous area when it comes to officiating, because it can easily be used to inflict considerable damage if used incorrectly.

“This was a prime example of that where Kane used his elbow as a weapon, and the swinging motion combined with the look back at Gabriel moments before the contact leaves the Bayern Munich striker no defence.

“It qualifies as a violent action and had he committed the offence in the Premier League, I am sure he would have been sent off. It is a nailed-on red card for me.”

Arsenal vs Bayern Munich had two other controversial incidents

Harry Kane was definitely a lucky boy last night – the former Tottenham man deserved a red card.

The game would’ve been completely different if the referee had made the right decision, but unfortunately for Arsenal, Kane stayed on.

That’s not the only decision that went against the Gunners. Bukayo Saka was denied a late penalty as well after he was brought down inside the box by Manuel Neuer.

Bayern Munich had their complaints too. Gabriel Magalhaes handled the ball inside the penalty area after a pass from David Raya, but the referee decided against awarding a penalty.

All the controversy is irrelevant now. The only thing that matters is the score, which is 2-2 going into the second leg in Munich next week.
