Report: League leaders now interested in Manchester United player who hasn't kicked a ball since December

Manchester United fans can expect to see a busy summer with plenty of ins and outs expected as Ineos get down to work at Old Trafford.

The end of the season is in sight now and big changes are surely imminent.

Much of the speculation right now surrounds off-field moves with United chasing Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth and Southampton’s Jason Wilcox.

Ineos will then turn the attention to Erik ten Hag’s future with the Dutchman far from secure right now following a disappointing campaign.

United will also make changes to the squad with many players expected to move on – and hopefully some quality additions to come in.

Questions surround the likes of Raphael Varane and Casemiro, two players who have struggled for form and fitness this season.

Decisions must be taken on the contracts of both Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton, but one player is destined for the exit.

League leaders want Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial’s contract expires this summer and after nine years – yes, nine years – at United, it looks like his time is up.

The Frenchman looked like becoming a superstar after his first season at United, hitting 17 goals in all competitions.

The last few years have been immensely frustrating though with Martial managing just 19 goals since the end of the 2019-20 season.

Martial hasn’t played since the 9th of December and there is surely no way that United extend his deal this summer.

That will pave the way for him to leave on a free transfer and he appears to have one key suitor.

Reporter Rudy Galetti claims that Inter Milan are interested in Martial and looked into signing him during the January transfer window.

It’s stated that Inter’s top target is the Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson, but Martial’s status as a free agent is appealing.

Inter sit 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A table and have lost just one league game all season.

Inter should get over the line very soon and we may then see them launch a move to sign Martial, attempting to get his career back on track.

Another ex-United player at Inter?

If Martial joins Inter, then the move would only add to Inter’s ranks of former United players.

Defender Matteo Darmian has been with Inter for four years now and continues to play an important role under Simone Inzaghi.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been crucial in Inter’s run towards the title, reinventing himself as a central midfielder since his disappointing spell at United.

Then there is Alexis Sanchez, who rejoined Inter last summer and has only started four league games this season at the age of 35.

That is quite the collection of former United misfits and Martial may add to that contingent – but it depends on whether Inter can land Gudmundsson instead.
