Snooker legends White and Virgo step up to the table for evening of entertainment at Stansted Social Club

Snooker legends Jimmy White and John Virgo cued up an evening of sporting fun at Stansted Social Club.

Jimmy ‘The Whirlwhind’ White – a nickname he earned for his swift pace of play - returned to the Lower Street venue on Friday evening (March 29) having previously opened the revamped snooker rooms back in 2021.

This time he was joined at the baize by former professional John Virgo, now a TV commentator on the game who is also renowned for his amusing impressions of fellow players.

Club chairman Alan Snook said the pair entertained a packed crowd of around 70 people with Jimmy playing 10 frames – three with the club’s snooker team and other rounds raffled and auctioned off with members getting the chance to play against one of the sport’s most well-known names.

Jimmy is ranked high up the list of snooker’s most successful players of all time, but the former UK and Masters champion also famously never won a world title.

Alan said: “The evening went remarkably well with a packed out room. John Virgo did his funny impressions and commentary throughout the night and then did a few trick shots as well. It was a really good night.

“It was great to have them here as we have got some super teams and it gives something back to them as well.”
