German athletes' group welcomes athletics prize money at Olympics

The Athletes Germany group has welcomed the announcement that World Athletics will dish out prize money to Olympic champions in the sport, and named the decision "a wake-up call" for the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

World Athletics said on Wednesday that gold medallists at this year's Paris Games will receive $50,000. Silver and bronze medallists are to be added to the prize money pool at Los Angeles 2028.

"We rate the decision of World Athletics to pass on a share of the IOC income as winning bonuses to the athletes as big progress," Athletes Germany managing director Johannes Herber told dpa.

"The athletes and their performances are the cornerstone of the IOC's multi-billion business model.

"The move by World Athletics should be another wake-up call for the IOC and the other international federations to finally give athletes a share of the revenue they generate."

Herber said that Wednesday's announcement should only be a first step, and that all Olympians should benefit in the future.

"Such revenue sharing via an earmarked fund should not only apply to medallists, but to all athletes who qualify for the Games," Herber said.
