Man linked with supplying money to Hamas found dead in Lebanon

A Lebanese man believed to have links to the Palestinian extremist organization Hamas has been found dead in Lebanon, according to police and security sources.

The man was shot five times, Lebanese police said on Wednesday. He was found in the area around Beit Meri, about 20 kilometres north-east of Beirut.

A robbery-murder was ruled out because large sums of cash, which were attributed to the victim, were left at the crime scene.

The man in his 50s, who was identified as Mohamed Sarur, was sanctioned in 2019.

According to security sources, Sarur went missing on Saturday and his body was found on Tuesday.

In August 2019, he was sanctioned by the United States and accused of being a financial operative in charge of transferring tens of millions of dollars per year from Iran to the al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas.

The US treasury also said Sarur has worked extensively with Shiite Lebanese movement Hezbollah operatives to ensure funds.

Hezbollah is financed and trained by Iran.
