Kansas City mayor says Chiefs aren’t leaving despite relocation rumors

The mayor of Kansas City made it clear that the Chiefs are not leaving the city. Quinton Lucas went to social media to respond to the relocation rumors, saying the Chiefs are here to stay.

“I hear rumors, including even from the Mayor of Dallas,” Lucas wrote, per Pro Football Talk. “Kansas City, don’t believe the noise. We are committed to retention of our teams with vastly lower expenses–think needed infrastructure build out–than even an intra-metro move. Both teams will be in KCMO in 2040 and long after.”

The Chiefs threatend the team could leave Kansas City if a sales tax extention for a renovated Arrowhead Stadium didn’t pass earlier this month. The city voted against it, leaving the Chiefs’ future in Kansas City uncertain.

Will the Chiefs move back to Dallas?

Eric Johnson, the Mayor of Dallas,is pushing for the Chiefs to move back to the city as the team started as the Dallas Texans. “The connections are so deep, the history is so rich,” Johnson told The Athletic. “We actually could put together the deals that would make sense for them to get them here.”

Johnson also said he speaks with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt but didn’t reveal to The Athletic if they discussed a potential move. “I’m not really at liberty to say other than I have a good open line of communication with Clark Hunt,” Johnson said. “And that line of communication remains.”

If Chiefs moved back to Dallas, the city would one of three to have two NFL fanchises, with the other two being New York and Los Angeles. Johnson said he and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have talked about a second Dallas team a couple years back when the city was pushing to host games for the 2026 World Cup.

“You can be rest assured that you would not have the NFL supporting another team because of the kind of value that the game and the NFL receives of having [the] Dallas Cowboys as one of its marquee teams,” Johnson told the Dallas Morning News in 2022.

Clark Hunt founded the Texans in 1959, and the team started playing games in 1960. The Texans only played for three seasons before movingto Kansas City to become the Chiefs. In it’s history, the Chiefs have won four Super Bowl titles, including three of the last five. They also won three American Football League titles in the 1960s.
