'You're having a laugh'... Brit smashes mug after US girlfriend makes him tea the 'American way'

Any British person will tell you just how sacred a good cup of tea is and a video circulating on social media has been causing outrage after a woman from the US made tea for her British boyfriend the ‘American way.’

The video in question was posted to Instagram by Alex Murphy Klein, a former professional dancer who has previously appeared on the TV show, Dancing on Ice.

US girlfriend makes cup of tea the ‘American way’ for her British boyfriend

Originally from Boston, Alex begins the video by demonstrating the ‘American way’ of making a cuppa. Look away now, Brits.

Instead of using boiling water, Alex instead pours cold water and milk over the teabag before adding a spoonful of sugar.

She then places the mug in the microwave to heat up the cursed concoction.

When Alex gives the cup of tea to her boyfriend, British YouTuber Paul Klein, he takes a sip and immediately grimaces before asking, “What is that?”

Confused, he takes another sip and recoils, sticking out his tongue. “That is disgusting,” he says. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude… but that is not a cup of tea.”

When Alex reveals that she made the tea in the microwave, Paul responds by saying, “You’re having a laugh,” before throwing the glass mug on the ground, causing it to smash.

The video was originally posted in 2022 but has resurfaced thanks to the Instagram algorithm. Despite the tea incident, Alex and Paul are still together and got married in December 2023.

Social media reacts

While there is no truly right way to make a cup of tea – even Brits disagree on which order you should put milk into your brew – Instagram users have united in agreement that the method shown in the video is definitely the wrong way.

One commenter said: “No such thing as American tea. That’s garbage.”

A second added: “This hurts my soul. This is so wrong!”

“As a Canadian that is the most disgusting thing I’ve seen in my life,” added another.

This Instagram user was driven to post their first-ever comment after seeing the video: “First time ever commenting on Instagram but I was disgusted by the tea. Babes you can’t ever do that again… poor man although I hope you made him clean the mess up the dirty sod.”

“Oh that’s wrong on so many levels,” said a fourth. “And I’m not even British.”

And finally, this American commenter said: “Ok, she doesn’t speak for all Americans! Me and the hubs have tea from time to time and we DO NOT do that.”
