Police shoot attacker in France's Bordeaux after fatal knife attack

A knife attacker has been shot dead by police in the south-western French city of Bordeaux after a fatal attack.

The man stabbed a pedestrian and seriously injured two others in a busy area on the banks of the river Garonne on Wednesday evening, the broadcaster France Info and other media reported, citing the police.

The 37-year-old fled the scene and was shot dead by police when he refused to put down his weapon. Investigators are not assuming a terrorist motive. Rather, there is said to have been an argument between the perpetrator and the victim over the consumption of alcohol.

The attacker had accused a group of people of North African origin of drinking alcohol, the local newspaper Sud Ouest reported. The situation escalated and the attacker then pulled out a knife.

The dead man is said to be a 36-year-old Algerian who was injured in the neck. The two seriously injured men were taken to the university hospital in Bordeaux.
