German parliament debates Russian disinformation campaign

The lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag, plans discuss reports of a Russian disinformation campaign and possible links to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a topical debate on Thursday.

The debate was organized at the request of the three governmenbt coalition parties - the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and pro-business Free Democrats (FPD) - under the title "Full investigation into possible involvement and cooperation of members of the AfD parliamentary group with authoritarian regimes."

The background to the debate are reports about the pro-Russian internet platform Voice of Europe (VoE), which was placed on the national sanctions list by the Czech Cabinet.

Interviews with AfD politician Petr Bystron and his party colleague Maximilian Krah appeared on the portal.

The Czech newspaper Denik N had reported that Bystron may also have accepted money. The AfD lawmaker has repeatedly denied this.

Other topics on the parliamentary agenda include the three-party coalition's programme to provide special support to 4,000 schools in difficult locations, and the federal government's nutrition strategy.

A debate to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda is also on the agenda.
