'It's actually better': Thierry Henry explains why he prefers the Champions League without Liverpool this season

Liverpool have had to watch on over the past two days as the Champions League quarter-finals go ahead without them.

The Reds have become used to taking part in the latter stages of Europe’s most prestigious competition during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

However, having failed to make it seven seasons in a row at the top table last year, they’ve had to make do with the Europa League this term.

Not that that should especially bother anyone anymore. Liverpool look well on course to regain their spot in the Champions League for 2024/25. Meanwhile, they’re looking good to justify their tag as favourites for the Europa League, too.

Should they make the final in Dublin it’ll be one heck of a party, despite the lowly ticket allocation. So, what we’re trying to say is, we’ve made our peace with missing out for a season, and it seems we’re not alone in gladly seeing Liverpool take a break from a year.

What has Thierry Henry said about Liverpool

Thierry Henry will always be synonymous with Arsenal. So, with the Gunners aiming for a first ever Champions League trophy this season, you could understand why he’d want Liverpool out of the way.

However, that isn’t what he was suggesting here. Henry also played for Barcelona during his career and was crowned a European champion with the club in 2009. So, it makes sense for him to cover the Catalans in their Champions League games on CBS Sports Golazo.

Also covering their match against PSG last night was, as usual, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. With the Reds not competing this year, Carragher is able to stay more or less neutral during the coverage.

And according to Henry, this is making his life a whole lot more enjoyable on Champions League nights.

“He’s [Carragher] having fun, it’s actually better when Liverpool are not in the Champions League,” joked the Frenchman.

“He’s a bit more relaxed, there’s less screaming.”

Are Liverpool guaranteed a Champions League spot in 24/24

To some Liverpool fans, it was akin to the end of the world when the Reds didn’t manage a top four finish last season. For the first time in seven years, they’d be playing in the Europa League.

However, it has ended up being a great competition for Liverpool. Youngsters like Jarell Quansah in particular have been given the time to grow that they wouldn’t have been in the Champions League.

If the Reds can go on and win the competition, then it’ll all have worked out fine, really.

That isn’t to say we don’t want to be back where we belong though, and Liverpool should be going for Ol’ Big Ears next season. As things stand, they need eight points from their last seven games to be sure of a place in the Champions League in 24/25. It’s going to happen. Enjoy it while you can, Thierry.
