'I would disagree': Roy Keane has inadvertently given his verdict on West Ham striker Michail Antonio's podcast

Roy Keane has now inadvertently shared his verdict on West Ham United striker Michail Antonio believed involved in a weekly podcast.

It’s become a lot more common for current footballers to be involved in podcasts these days, and Michail Antonio is perhaps leading the way.

Having previously hosted a podcast alongside Callum Wilson, the striker now discusses footballing affairs with Fulham captain Tom Cairney for the BBC.

Antonio is always very candid with his words, and certainly doesn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts.

It’s a new experience for football fans, who are normally used to hearing former players share their opinions.

And whilst a fresh insight will be enjoyed by fans, some may wonder how the clubs of the respective players feel.

That being said, Roy Keane certainly thought being involved in such a podcast could prove as a real distraction for footballers still playing at the highest level.

Keane was speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast and thought it was a bad look for players, particularly when having a laugh on the back of a defeat.

Roy Keane appears to criticise West Ham striker Michail Antonio for podcast

Speaking on the podcast, Roy Keane didn’t name names, but appeared to be referencing the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast’.

He explained: “I think you have to be open minded about it, there’s a time and a place, but if you have a regular podcast on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and you’re a player at the top level.

“I think I would disagree with people, I think that can be a distraction for a player.

“Particularly if you’re on the back of a defeat, and you’re in the next day and everyone is having a bit of a laugh.

“I don’t think you should laugh for a week or two if you’ve been beaten.”

Of course, some will strongly disagree with that view, feeling that it’s healthy for footballers to be able to voice their view in their spare time.

The likes of Antonio, Wilson or Cairney have never overstepped the line when representing their clubs off of the field in this scenario, and have just provided further insight.

But similarly, it’s not too surprising that some former players will think it’s unnecessary and a distraction.

Of course, podcast or not, Michail Antonio will be fully focused on West Ham’s tantalising tie with Bayer Leverkusen tonight.

And despite being without Jarrod Bowen, David Moyes will certainly have a plan to foil Xabi Alonso’s high-flying side.
