Sam Hunt on His Arrest: ‘It Was a Wake-Up Call’

Sam Hunt is looking back on his very public arrest, saying the incident helped set him straight.

Hunt released his newLocked Up EP on April 5, and announced a tour with the same name, which is slated for 2024.

He was a guest on Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul, where he revealed that his arrest in 2019 for a DUI was a “wake-up call” for the “Body Like a Backroad” singer.

Hunt says, “Well, it was a wake-up call immediately, you know, the next day. I think over time, you know, you reflect on it, you realize, you know, you learn from your mistakes.”

Hunt’s song, “Locked Up,” on his new EP isn’t totally written from the first-person angle. Hunt tells Taste of Country Nights, “The song itself though, it’s not, you know, it may seem autobiographical if you connect the dots. But, you know, I made a point not to go into the details in the song about my story.”

The “Outskirts” singer further explained the process of writing his song, “Locked Up,” and how he carefully crafted it to be more relatable to his audience.

“I tried to zoom it out and make it more relatable so that it feels more like it’s about making a big mistake or messing up, and having your significant other stick with you through that. And realizing through that how much she loves you and how much you love her, and how strong your bond is.”

Hunt notoriously stays low-key about most things in his personal life, so the fact that this EP contains some things interwoven from his own personal life is a special treat for his fans.

As far as future music, Hunt says he is now going to start fresh on his next project and take it from there.
