Latest price tag for 28-year-old Man Utd target changes everything, he should be first-choice this summer - opinion

For Manchester United, one target might’ve just become a must-buy this summer, with his price tag now looking very affordable.

One position which is among the top priorities this summer for Erik ten Hag is the striker role.

Despite Rasmus Hojlund showing promise for Manchester United, he just isn’t consistent enough to be starting every week.

Therefore, a player capable of doing so has been tipped as something United want this summer.

But this is a costly position to strengthen which doesn’t make it easy to do. But now one of the number one targets has seen his price tag slashed which could make him a must-sign.

Let’s have a look at who it is…

Ivan Toney’s new price tag should make him first choice this summer

The need for United to sign a new striker is more prominent than ever and now one target looks too good to pass up on.

Ivan Toney is a player the United have been keen on this year as a striker signing, but he previously had a worryingly high price tag of £80m.

This no longer looks to be the case however with Florian Plettenberg reporting that Toney will actually be available for around £30m to £40m this summer.

Signing a player like Toney for this price is something United cannot pass up on, and it could change everything in the bid to sign him.

He’d revolutionise the position and almost certainly be an upgrade on Hojlund who isn’t quite ready to start regularly.

How does Ivan Toney compare with current Manchester United strikers?

Signing Toney certainly feels like a good idea, as he’s one of the best English strikers currently in the league.

But how does he rank compared with the current United strikers on a per-90 basis? Let’s find out.

Ivan Toney vs Rasmus Hojlund vs Anthony Martial

From this, it’s clear to see that this season, Hojlund has actually been the best goalscorer of the three.

This suggests that with United improving and handing him more chances, his goal tally would only improve.

With just 1.62 shots per game, he can’t really be expected to have the most impressive goals tally.

Hojlund is almost certainly going to be a top-class striker and he just needs the team to be performing around him, but Toney to support him would create a very solid duo.
