Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool’s defeat to Atalanta and gives Jurgen Klopp selection advice

Liverpool could take few positives after registering a shocking result against Atalanta this evening.

The Reds were heavy favourites to progress in a competition that they have been backed to win since the start of the season.

However, the attitude was all wrong right from the start of the game. With the crowd strangely quiet, Liverpool looked complacent from the off.

The performance was littered with individual errors and led to a collective malaise which we’ve rarely seen from the Reds under Klopp.

Over the coming days, there will likely be a huge reaction to a game that will go down in history as one of the worst under the manager. And straight after the game, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher gave his instant reaction to a shocking result.

Jamie Carragher gives instant Atalanta reaction

Nobody really saw this coming did they? Liverpool were absolutely dreadful on the night and were quite rightly punished.

With a big game to come in the Premier League on Sunday, it remains to be seen exactly how much effect this will have on the Reds’ title challenge.

In the midst of the full-time whistle, Carragher didn’t appear to think it will matter too much. Taking to X, the Reds legend urged Klopp to play a second-string side out in Italy and focus on matters in the league.

“Awful result & performance from Liverpool, the only consolation about getting beat so heavily is Jurgen should play a full second string in the second leg & go all in for the league!” says the pundit.

If Liverpool play a second string in Bergamo next week, there’s no chance they’ll get through. But with progress now a tall order anyway, perhaps it’s time to accept defeat already.

Should Liverpool play a second-string next week

From our point of view, Liverpool really shouldn’t be calling this one a day already. These players have got themselves into this mess tonight. It’s up to them to put things right.

Although it’s a really difficult task, the Reds have come back from worse before. Get the mindset right, and they could still do something special.

For us, we’re now slightly worried about how this will effect Liverpool’s title push. The performance was that bad, that it could have a huge knock on.

A big reaction is needed on Sunday.
