'Unexpected': David Seaman says there's a 'mystery' about Everton which he just can't work out

David Seaman has suggested there’s a “mystery” about Everton that he can’t work out at the moment.

The Toffees are once against battling at the bottom end of the Premier League table for a third consecutive season.

2023/24 has seen added turmoil at Goodison Park. The club have been docked eight points by the Premier League and sit just two points above Luton Town in 18th place.

A 13-game winless run also added to Sean Dyche’s issues as the 52-year-old aims to steer Everton away from a nervy end to the season.

Talking on the Seaman Says Podcast, the Arsenal legend initially spoke about whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin will leave the club.

“I think what a lot of clubs will be looking at is that they will be wanting to see him have a longer run of games because he is injury-prone; there is no doubt about that,” he said.

Seaman went on to suggest that relegation could have a massive factor on players departing Goodison Park. He added: “The other side of it, is with Everton, if they relegated you imagine there will be quite a few players leaving. If they get relegated, would they put the price down? If they stay up, they will want to try and keep their best.”

The 60-year-old then admitted that he cannot understand how Everton are continually embroiled in relegation battles.

“He has to prove more than what he is doing. The unexpected part of it, is where Everton are. They are battling relegation season after season. That’s the mystery for me. It’s like, why has that not changed.”

Massive Premier League fixtures hone into view for Everton

Evertonians will know much more about their side’s prospects after the Toffees’ next five fixtures. Monday’s trip to Chelsea is followed by a massive clash against Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday, 21 April.

Victory over Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will go a long way in securing Premier League survival. After the Merseyside Derby at the end of April is a trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town. With the Hatters just two points adrift, the journey to Bedfordshire could have enormous implications for both teams.

The narrow win over Burnley must be used as a springboard for Dyche’s side. Calvert-Lewin has found the goal trail once more, and the 27-year-old must build on his recent good form.
