A top BBC News broadcaster has revealed she will be taking months off-air due to requiring surgery.

Karin Giannone, a household name for her regular appearances on BBC News, has revealed she will be absent from our screens for several months following major surgery. The 50-year-old news anchor took to social media to share the news with her followers that she had undergone a significant knee osteotomy operation.

The news anchor took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share a snap of herself taken in a hospital bed as she was seen with monitoring wires around her as she recovered from the major operation. Accompanying the image, Karin penned: "I'm out of action for a couple of months after a knee osteotomy surgery, but very much looking forward to being back on air on @BBCNews when I am up and running again! " Despite her love for pounding the pavement, she humorously added: "(*not actually running - that won't happen for a while)."

Fans and colleagues alike hastened to wish her well. Fellow BBC News star, Martine Croxall replied: "Woozy and wonderful x." Yasmin Khatun Dewan, a BBC World News presenter commented: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Karin xx."

One fan penned: "Best wishes to you, Karin. Get well soon." A second penned: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Karin xx." Another friendly face declared: "Karin hope your recovery goes well - and see you soon!"

"Get well soon my dear friend," wrote another. Karin later took to her Instagram Stories to share her announcement, sharing a snap of her leg in a leg brace as she recuperated in a hospital bed. The broadcaster previously explained that she required the surgery for "a long time", joking "about 30 years".

Taking to her Instagram Grid on Thursday, she shared a series of snaps taken over recent weeks after completing a string of half marathons. Writing alongside her images, Karin penned: "3rd #halfmarathon in a fortnight to really overdo it before I succumb this week to a knee surgery I’ve needed for a long time (about 30 years!)

"Lovely surprise section through #southamptonfc stadium as well as passing the #unioncastleline building at the docks where at the age of two I arrived with my family on a ship for a new life in the UK."

"Well done Karin and hope the op goes well. As you know, you have my full sympathies concerning teenage knee injuries," said one fan. Another responded: "Very well done!!! I always wonder how you manage to look so remarkably well after a long distance run!!!! Very best wishes for the operation I do hope it goes well." Meanwhile, BBC's Olga Malchevska commented: "This is such an incredible achievement! Congratulations! And may your knee recover quickly."
