Gers in Old Firm transfer link, Ibrox homecoming option would save millions

There is no smoke without fire is a well-worn saying and, for Rangers, Philippe Clement continues to be linked with new goalkeepers.

The Gers boss has been mentioned as being interested in Standard Liege stopper Arnaud Bodart, however, this was swiftly dismissed by a reliable Belgian source.

During the summer, Rangers will need to address the goalkeeping situation at the club though and Philippe Clement is said to be keeping an eye on another glovesman.

Rangers looking to give Philippe Clement goalkeeper depth?

The players that have been linked don’t seem to be the sort to replace Jack Butland and the latest hasn’t even been his side’s first choice all season.

The problem is, Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie could both leave Ibrox in the summer having been long-term backups to two different number ones.

Speaking earlier in the season, Jack Butland was quick to give Rangers fans some good news amid interest and a reported offer from Nottingham Forest:

“It was a no on all fronts from the get go,” said Butland.

“I’m enjoying it,” he said. “There’s too much to achieve, there’s too much left to do.

“Here has been a feeling and a connection I’ve not felt with a club for a long time. You don’t give that up easy.”

Hopefully, the speculation ends with Rangers price tag of some £10-15million.

Who have Rangers been linked with now?

The latest transfer news has seen Middlesbrough’s Tom Glover, an appropriate name for a keeper, said to be a summer target by ftbl.com.

A record of 27 goals conceded in 20 games is hardly convincing and the Australian is still under contract until 2027.

English clubs are rarely quick to let players leave on the cheap nowadays too.

The red flag with this deal, is that Celtic are also said to be interested – where have we seen that story before?

If Rangers are looking for an experienced keeper to be a backup to Jack Butland who is capable of being a stand in number one, I don’t see why Nils Koppen should look past Liam Kelly.

There is every chance that the former Auchenhowie kid wouldn’t want to play second fiddle but, if McCrorie does leave, then we could do with maintaining the home-grown status.

Kelly is now a regular in the Scotland squad and for all that I wouldn’t want him to be a permanent replacement for Jack Butland, like McCrorie, I wouldn’t worry about him providing cover.

On a free, it certainly makes a lot more sense than adding another foreigner who would cost upwards of the £3.4m mentioned for Bodart.
