Prolific Middlesbrough teenager now attracting 'interest from several clubs' - Fabrizio Romano

Middlesbrough have yet another player attracting interest from ‘several clubs’, it’s been claimed.

Middlesbrough are very much a selling club, but that’s the way of the Championship.

Teams must bring in players and turn them into valuable assets and Middlesbrough have done that very recently, and very well.

They brought in Morgan Rogers last summer for a reported £1.5million and then sold him to Aston Villa for £16million in January.

And going into this summer, Boro have a few more players who could leave for hefty transfer fees.

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed on X that Middlesbrough academy man Ajay Matthews has ‘interest from several clubs’ ahead of the summer.

The 17-year-old has been featuring for both the club’s U18s and U21s this season, and is currently under contract until 2025 after signing his first professional contract last summer.

Romano posted on X:

Michael Carrick surely knows what to do now

Whenever a youngster like Matthews attracts top interest, it usually leads to the player getting some first-team minutes.

Middlesbrough aren’t in the greatest position re his contract and so the club will surely be keen to prove to Mathews that there’s a route into the first-team, and eventually get him on a longer deal.

He’s certainly impressing and knocking on the door of the first-team, so Michael Carrick will surely be inclined to give him his chance.

And going off examples like Hackney, Matthews will surely have faith in his club.

With Middlesbrough still battling away for top six though, there might not be a suitable time to unleash Matthews in the Championship.

The summer ahead then could be a very testing one for Boro where Matthews is regarded, with top flight interest from Europe bound to be appealing to the teenager.
