Report: Wolves now battling Leeds United in race to sign ‘terrific’ 27-year-old this summer

A fresh update has emerged in Wolves’ pursuit to sign a striker this summer as Gary O’Neil looks to add more firepower to his ranks.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil was left deeply frustrated in the January transfer window as one pressing issue wasn’t resolved.

O’Neil wanted to sign a striker after letting Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva depart on loan. Despite coming close to landing multiple forwards, the only player who arrived was 18-year-old Noha Lemina from Paris Saint-Germain.

Their shortcomings in the transfer market were compounded as several of their attacking players suffered injuries, leaving the former Bournemouth manager light in attack.

As teenagers Nathan Fraser and Leon Chiwome have shouldered the responsibility, O’Neil was happy to have Matheus Cunha back in the squad following injury.

His return, meanwhile, hasn’t stopped Wolves looking ahead to the summer, especially with Pedro Neto likely to depart.

Wolves eye move for Che Adams on a free transfer

Wolves were heavily linked with a move for Southampton strike Che Adams last summer.

O’Neil was desperate to add the 27-year-old to his squad, but despite their best efforts, the Saints blocked his move out of St Mary’s.

Adams’ contract expires in the summer and the Scotland international is set to leave on a free transfer as Mike McGrath previously reported that Wolves are leading the race for his signature.

The latest report to emerge on Wolves’ long-standing interest in the Southampton striker is from TEAMtalk, and they’ve revealed O’Neil’s men are locked in a battle with Championship side Leeds United.

Che Adams is the type of striker Wolves crave

It’s been over four years since Wolves had a striker who broke the 10-goal barrier in the Premier League with Raul Jimenez being the last player to do so in the 2019/20 campaign.

The Mexcian sharp shooter netted 17 goals that year but following his terrible injury, the Wanderers were forced to find goals from elsewhere.

Since the former Wolves hero took the top flight by storm at Molineux, the Old Gold haven’t found a consistent source of goals up top, with Hwang Hee-Chan and Cunha showing significant improvements under O’Neil.

Wolves are craving a number nine and Adams –once hailed as ‘terrific’ by the legendary Ally McCoist – could answer their prayers.

The 27-year-old has starred in Southampton’s pursuit of promotion, scoring 14 and assisting five in all competitions.

More importantly, Adams is reaching the prime years of his career and he’s proven he can score goals in the Premier League previously.

Having netted 10 in all competitions for the Saints last term, O’Neil could potentially take the former Birmingham striker to the next level by playing him alongside supremely talented attacking players.

Only time will tell as to whether Wolves can seal a move for Adams, but on a free transfer, it seems like a no-brainer.
