'Ethically compromised': Ex-colleague of Trump lawyer says no choice but to quit team

Donald Trump's lawyer Evan Corcoran quietly left the legal team in recent months, CNN reported Thursday — though Trump's staff is swearing he's still working for the former president.

Speaking to CNN Friday, former prosecutor and current defense attorney Shan Wu seemed confused by the comment.

According to Wu, Corcoran could certainly remain on the payroll, but he's "ethically compromised" and must step aside.

The compromise, he said, relates to Corcoran being Trump's lawyer and also a key witness in the classified documents case because he was involved when Trump was allegedly trying to hide documents.

Claims that his involvement was covered by attorney-client privilege were dismissed by a district judge, who ruled he wasn't covered because he was potentially involved in the furtherance of a crime. Notes and memos he kept have now become a central part of the case and he would likely be a key witness for the prosecution.

"I know Evan, we were colleagues for many years and I have always felt he is in an impossible position and needed to have withdrawn from the case ages ago," Wu explained.

Corcoran was in an important role, Wu explained, having many "face-to-face interactions" with Trump.

“Mr. Corcoran remains on the legal team and is continuing to help fight the Biden Trial witch-hunts,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement to CNN. He added that, “Any assertion otherwise is fake news peddled by uninformed sources and untruthful reporting that seeks to leak disinformation and misinformation.”

But Wu said that Corcoran has no choice but to step away from the legal team, given what has unfolded.

"He can't possibly stay on Trump's legal team, really in any manner, because he's not just a witness, he's a critical witness," he continued, noting that Trump can't shield him from testimony.
