38-goal striker in Gers transfer link, four clubs in chase

For the second summer in a row Rangers will have to undergo something of a squad overhaul with Philippe Clement the man in charge this time around.

There are six players out of contract in the summer with as many as 10 potentially leaving in total if the Gers boss wants to streamline his squad.

So far, only John Lundstram is said to have been offered a new contract and it looks like one Rangers star has been told by Philippe Clement that he is free to go after a new transfer report by Pete O’Rourke, formerly of Sky Sports.

Rangers give Kemar Roofe exit green light in Philippe Clement cull

The forward line is going to be an interesting area that the manager will need to address.

We haven’t really seen enough of Danilo to judge him one way or another but Cyriel Dessers looks like a more than adequate backup – even if we did overpay for him.

The other is Kemar Roofe who has, according to O’Rourke been linked with four teams from down south; Fulham, Sheffield United, Southampton and QPR.

There is no doubt that at Kemar Roofe has the ability to score goals for any of these clubs but we all know what his problem is, as explained recently by Philippe Clement when asked why the striker wasn’t in Rangers squad:

“Kemar is getting better and better, but of course he comes from a long way back. And there’s competition now.

“There are also other players, so it’s about him giving his best, which he has been doing in training, and raising his levels.

“Roofe comes from far away because he hasn’t played too many minutes this season.

“Physically, he is close to 90 minutes, but there’s also competition from others. That way it’s a positive thing. I start to get headaches again about making decisions.”

Can Kemar Roofe return to his title winning Rangers form?

On a free transfer, you could understand why someone might take a punt on a one-year contract for a player who cost us a reported £4.5m.

It’s low risk in terms of financial outlay and, if you can get 30 games out of him, you know you are getting double figures in terms of goals.

There is only one problem, he’s only played over 30 games in his first two seasons with his minutes depreciating year on year, age tends not to help an athlete’s resilience to injury.

Roofe would probably jump at the chance to play for a Premier League side and Fulham could well be the only one of the four clubs mentioned in England’s top flight next season.

It would also see him reunited with fellow Europa League finalist Calvin Bassey.

On a reported £26,000 per week, that’s a lot of money over the last two seasons – over £2.5m – for less than 10 games worth of minutes and circa £5m for 38 goals.

He might yet offer a club a cheap goal scoring option, however, it’s more likely that he keeps the medical team busy and spends more time in the stands than on the pitch.
