'One broken man abused by another broken man': Trump-Johnson presser ridiculed online

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - APRIL 12: Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson

Former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson's Mar-a-Lago press conference Friday was met with almost immediate scorn from a slew of social media skeptics.

Trump and Johnson's national address focused on an "election integrity" bill the two Republicans argued was necessary to prevent "hundreds of thousands" of noncitizens from taking part in federal elections. The press conference also provided the the pair a platform to speak out against immigration policy under President Joe Biden.

"This is pure dominance performance art," said X user Jim Stewartson, "with one broken man being abused by another broken man to openly cheat to win an election by abusing Congressional power."

MSNBC correspondent Molly Jong-Fast was quick to point out Trump's and Johnson's respective roles in killing an immigration and foreign aid bill that died in the Senate earlier this year.

"Trump who refused to let Mike Johnson bring up the conservative border bill for a vote is now complaining about the border," she said. "Mike Johnson who refused to hold a vote on the very conservative border bill is now complaining about the border."

X user Chuck Finley responded directly to a Johnson social media post condemning Biden policies he dubbed "completely backward and illegal."

"Bring the BIPARTISAN border bill up for a vote," Finley wrote. "Stop bowing down to Trump and go to work for the American people."

X user Cathy Goodge levied her criticism at Trump's immigration policies as former President.

"If Trump secured the border 4 years ago, why is it a mess now," Goodge asked. "Trump didn't do anything!"

This point was echoed by Christopher Himsl, who asked, "If Trump's border policies were so effective, why did fentanyl overdose deaths double on his watch?"

The Lincoln Project took umbrage with Johnson's decision as an elected official to push policy in Trump's Florida home.

"Mike Johnson just flew to Mar-a-Lago on your tax dollars to tell you that he's pushing a bill he knows won't even pass that aims to make illegal what is already illegal," the conservative group wrote, "Then hid behind Trump because he's scared to death of MTG. Name a more impotent, ineffective Speaker."
