One dead, dozens stranded as cable car crashes in Turkish resort town

One person was killed and at least 10 injured after a cable car cabin collided with a fallen mast in Turkey's Mediterranean resort town of Antalya, state media and officials reported.

Ninety-eight people out of 184 stranded mid-air have been evacuated since the accident on Friday evening, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote Saturday on X, formerly Twitter.

Rescue efforts are underway with more than 500 personnel and eight aircraft, Yerlikaya added. A total of 25 cabins were initially suspended several meters in the air, disaster authority AFAD said.

During the rescue operations, a basket lowered from a helicopter was brought to the cabins into which people had to climb, state news agency Anadolu reported.

A rescue member was seen carrying a child to safety from one of the cabins, broadcaster Tele 1 footage showed early Saturday.

The cable car service spans over 1.7 kilometres from Antalya city centre to Tünektepe hill. Anadolu reported that one of the cable car masts had fallen over and that a cabin hit it and crashed into rocky terrain.

The accident comes at a busy season, coinciding with Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of Muslim holy month Ramadan.

An investigation is already underway.

The cable car is said to have been in operation since 2017 and consists of 36 cabins. It transports its guests to the summit of Tünektepe at a height of 605 metres.

The journey takes around nine minutes. There is room for six people in each cabin. It can transport 1,200 people per hour.

The summit offers a view of Antalya, which is a popular tourist destination, and the Mediterranean.
