Police say an officer was driving along the road when they spotted the lights of the car off the side of the road.

Other patrols and ambulance crews were called to the scene and the A2 was shut off.

An air ambulance also landed nearby and flew one of the women to a London hospital, while the other was taken by road.

They both suffered injuries described as serious, but not life-threatening.
