Netherlands closes representations in Tehran and Erbil to visitors

In view of a possible Iranian retaliatory strike against Israel, the Netherlands will on Sunday close its diplomatic representations in Tehran and the Iraqi city of Erbil to visitors.

This is a reponse to the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, the Foreign Ministry in The Hague announced on Saturday. However, the other functions of the representations would continue, it said.

A decision will be made on Sunday as to whether their consular sections will reopen on Monday. The Dutch representations in the region are in any case closed to visitors on Saturday.

On Friday, the Foreign Ministry advised Dutch citizens to postpone all non-essential travel to Israel and the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq.

The increasing tensions between Iran and Israel are "very worrying," said Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot, the ANP news agency reported.

On April 1, two brigadier generals and five other members of the powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) were killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Iranian leadership has since threatened several times to retaliate.
