The purpose of Russian strikes on the energy sector in Ukraine is to destroy maneuvering generation, says Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

At a meeting of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities held in Chernivtsi, Halushchenko said that as a result of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the system has lost a significant amount of electricity generation.

"Since March 22, the energy system has been under attack every day, and they are the most extensive, even compared to 2022-2023. We have lost a significant amount of thermal and hydro generation. There are also attacks on electricity transmission facilities. The enemy has planned all the attacks to destroy the country's maneuverable generation," the Minister emphasized.

The Minister briefed the Congress participants on the measures planned to restore and increase capacities and noted that despite the Russian strikes, the system has been maintained and is now operating stably.

Attacks on energy facilities

Since March, Russian occupants have intensified shelling of Ukraine. Their targets are most often energy infrastructure facilities.

As Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko recently noted, the latest Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have caused much more consequences than the attacks in the winter of 2022-2023.

The latest attack took place on April 11. The attack destroyed the Trypillia thermal power plant and damaged several energy facilities in the Kharkiv region.
