Paul Merson explains why Arsenal are more likely to win the Premier League than Man City

Arsenal are currently engaged in a fascinating Premier League title race alongside Manchester City and Liverpool, which could go down to the wire.

Mikel Arteta’s side have seven games remaining, and are currently two points behind Man City following their victory over Luton, although they have a game in hand as they are set to face Aston Villa on Sunday.

Liverpool are level on points with the Gunners, but have a worse goal difference, and Man City were playing catchup on points, having started the game week in third place behind both title rivals.

Arsenal icon Paul Merson has now claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool’s position of having more points prior to Man City’s victory over Luton, makes them more likely to win the title as it is in their hands.

Paul Merson backs Arsenal to stay above Manchester City

Speaking on Sky Sports News before City’s victory, Merson claimed that the fact it is out of City’s hands means that they are the least likely of the three to win the title.

“I still think it’s going to be Arsenal or Liverpool, it’s in their hands. If Arsenal and Liverpool go perfect from now to the end of the season, Man City can’t do anything about it,” he stated.”

“It’s out of City’s hands. Until it’s in their hands, they’ve got to keep on going and going. Even if they win all their remaining fixtures, if one of the other two go perfect they haven’t won the league.”

Winning seven games in a row to end the season will be a tough ask, particularly given some of the fixtures Arsenal have lined up, but Merson has backed his old side to beat Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United away.

“Arsenal came back from their winter break and won nine out of ten. They can do it,” he added.

“I’m quite confident for Arsenal against Tottenham. It will be an end-to-end football match, I just think Arsenal are stronger in midfield and I think they win that game.

“The way Man United are playing, you saw them against Liverpool. Klopp said Arsenal will beat them if they play like that. And if Everton are safe, without being horrible that’s a given.”

Arsenal do have to balance their Premier League charge with their Champions League campaign, and are set to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena just days after they face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at the Emirates, and rotation will be necessary if they are to compete on multiple fronts.
