US forces have intercepted Iranian drones, media reports say

US forces stationed in the Middle East have intercepted drones from Iran aimed at Israel amid an ongoing, large-scale attack, US media reports said, citing government officials.

The US military in the region had shot down Iranian drones flying towards Israel, according to CNN, ABC News, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

The US Defense Department said it was aware of the reports but did not want to comment on them for the time being.

A departmental official said that US forces in the region were shooting down Iranian drones targeting Israel, consistent with Washington's ironclad commitment to Israel's security, according to the New York Times.

The US has maintained and used bases in the Middle East for decades and 2,400 US soldiers are deployed in Iraq according to Pentagon data. Some 700 are stationed in Syria and around 4,000 in Jordan.

The Pentagon said on Friday it would increase its military presence and troop protection in the region, although Tehran has told the US to stay out of the conflict.

The Israeli news website ynet reported that Israeli intelligence had been informed of two drones fired from Iran early on Sunday that were intercepted and shot down by US forces or other regional defence facilities in the Gulf or Jordan.
