Bayern sporting director acknowledges injury rate is too high

Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund says the club are trying to figure out why they have suffered so many muscle injuries this season after winger Kingsley Coman became the latest victim.

The Bavarians have recorded 20 muscle injuries this term and Coman being substituted in Saturday's 2-0 Bundesliga win over Cologne leaves them short in wide areas for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg at home to Arsenal.

Fellow winger Serge Gnabry is also set to miss out with a muscle injury, with the score locked at 2-2.

"Unfortunately, it's been the case throughout the season. We have an extremely high number of injuries, muscle injuries," Freund told reporters.

"We're discussing it internally to see what the cause might be. It's not a good situation. The aim, of course, is to get through next season with fewer injuries."

The club are examining training, the grass on pitches or whether it might just be bad luck.

Former Bayern midfielder-turned-critic Didi Hamann told Sky on Saturday that it could be down to departing coach Thomas Tuchel not training his side enough. Tuchel hit back at his long-time foe, sarcastically telling a news conference: "Well Didi would know."

Tuchel leaves at the end of the season but club stalwart Thomas Müller said the injuries are not due to the coach as he recalled retired wing pair Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben also suffering a catalogue a fitness problems at Bayern.

"It's not the first time that we've lost important players towards the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the Champions League, that was the case with Rib and Rob from time to time," said the 34-year-old Müller.

"A lot of people in the background are worried."
