Tax deadline is here! There’s still time to file for free.

Time’s up. The April 15 tax deadline is here.

You can still file for free.

IRS Free File, a partnership between the IRS and private tax preparation companies, allows those with adjusted gross incomes of $79,000 or less to file federal tax returns for free. You may have to pay a fee to prepare state tax returns, but the service is free for federal returns.

The IRS haspartnered with eight companies for the 2023 tax season:

If you won’t be able to complete your return, you should file an extension.

But know that an extension to file your return is not an extension to pay any taxes you owe. You’ll owe penalties and interest if you don’t make a payment and end up owing money when you do complete your return.

“You must estimate and pay the tax you owe and file by the April deadline,” the IRS said.

If you don’t pay, you will be subject to penalties and interest even with the extension.

You must file the extension no later than April 15, the regular tax deadline, which will move your deadline to Oct. 15.

While IRS Free File has income limits, if you only need to file an extension, you can use the Free File services no matter your income, the IRS said.
