Latvia nominates Baiba Braze as new foreign minister

Baiba Braze has been nominated as Latvian foreign minister after Krisjanis Karins resigned in late March following a scandal over the use of charter flights, Prime Minister Evika Silina announced in Riga on Monday.

Braze had many years of experience in diplomacy and international relations, Silina said. The Latvian parliament has still to approve the appointment, with a vote likely on Thursday.

Braze currently serves as ambassador for special assignments in the Foreign Ministry. She previously had posts as ambassador to The Netherlands and to Britain, and as NATO assistant secretary general for public diplomacy from 2020 until June last year.

Following her nomination, Braze said her priorities would be working for a strong NATO and European Union, along with continuing support for Ukraine in fighting off the Russian invasion.
