Drew Carey addresses Writers Guild strike at 2024 awards ceremony

American actor and host Drew Carey took to the stage at the WGA awards in Los Angeles and gave insight into his decision to pay for the meals of WGA members during last year’s historical strike.

Paying for meals at the restaurants Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers, he admitted that during one instance the total bill came up to $67,000

Drew Carey is opening up about the hefty investment he made by paying for striking writers’ meals at two Los Angeles-area restaurants in 2023. “But some of you decided, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to get a shake and dessert,’ as it was way more this time,” he said, earning some laughs.

The Hollywood Reporter once reported Drew’s generosity and emphasis on solidarity with the writers likely cost roughly $1 million in meals, which certainly didn’t go unnoticed by his accountant.

“When the bills started piling up, my accountant called and was like, ‘Is there any way we can dial this back?’” Drew remembered in his speech.

Nevertheless, the actor stood his ground and insisted that continuing to show support and pay for meals was “the right thing to do.” Not only that, but he argued that simply doing the “right thing” shouldn’t necessarily earn his as much credit as he’s getting.

Drew Carey champions the writers who made him a ‘million’

All the same, the ceremony audience obviously found the credit well deserved when giving applause at the sentiment of Drew’s speech.

“You writers — well not all of you, The Drew Carey Show writers — made me a f***ing million,” he explained, criticizing the power dynamic in Hollywood. “Everybody in this room makes some actor a million. And you deserve all the money you get.”

Drew has also been vocal on social media from the start about his appreciation of the writers during the strike.

“If you really want to thank someone for those meals,” he once tweeted back in September, “thank Bruce Helford and all the Drew Carey Show writers. They helped make me rich enough to afford it, No writers, no $. Simple as that.”

Drew’s fans have been vocal about his good nature since the WGA ceremony speech, praising him as a compassionate example to follow.
