‘I'm surprised...': Pundit admits he didn't appreciate Aston Villa gem who's 'one to watch' until now

Aston Villa were the talk of the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as Unai Emery’s side beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates, with pundit Robbie Mustoe having a lot to say on one star’s display.

Given that Aston Villa had hit shaky form of late, not many would have expected to see Unai Emery’s side leave the Emirates with three points after recording an outstanding 2-0 victory over Arsenal.

It was an impeccable performance throughout from the visitors, who ensured they did the double over Emery’s former club in the Premier League this season, reinstating themselves within the top four of the table.

The Villans caused upset all over North London on Sunday, leapfrogging Tottenham to claim fourth place and putting a spanner in the works of Arsenal’s title hopes.

Goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins determined that the three points would return to the Midlands however, it wasn’t only the goalscorers who received a host of praise on the day.

Robbie Mustoe was full of praise for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers

For his display against Arsenal, and his overall quality in recent weeks for Villa, pundit Robbie Mustoe spoke highly of 21-year-old Morgan Rogers on The 2 Robbies podcast.

“My underappreciated performance was Morgan Rogers. I’m surprised how well he’s done.”

“I think the first game he played for Villa, he looked a bit shaky. The way he’s come into this team, in big games now, he’s getting more comfortable, playing in a different position, played on the right-hand side, dropping to midfield or just away from Ollie Watkins as the deep striker.”

“He keeps the ball well, he’s got good sight, he scored a lovely goal the other week with his left foot. This is one of those underappreciated players but more, one to watch.”

“I love a young player coming into a league and particularly a club like Aston Villa, I just think he’s one to watch, I just wanted to give him to mention.”

Starting in central midfield behind Watkins seemed to work well for the January arrival, who was influential going forward and tracking back for the Villans at the Emirates.

The Englishman’s work rate was certainly something to take from his display against Arsenal, showing impressive physicality to seem unphased in a midfield as well-contested as it was in North London.

Aston Villa secured a jewel in Morgan Rogers in January

Sealing a deal for Rogers is looking to have been a stroke of genius for Emery and Monchi, who acquired the 21-year-old from Middlesbrough for just £15m in January.

In the absence of Jacob Ramsey, the former Championship ace has done exceptionally well for Villa to not miss the Bodymoor Heath product too much, providing similar strengths to Ramsey in his approach to play.

To echo Mustoe’s belief that Rogers is ‘one to watch’, the only way seems to be up for the youngster, who has clearly won over the trust of Emery who has shown no sign of wanting to rotate the Englishman in recent weeks.
