The FBI and the Coast Guard have opened a criminal investigation into the deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, report the Washington PostandCNN. On Monday morning, federal agents boarded the container ship that struck the bridge pillar last month. "The FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity," the agency said in a statement.

  • The Post reports the federal inquiry "will look at least in part at whether the crew left the port knowing the vessel had serious systems problems."
  • The AP confirms the investigation and says it "is focused on the circumstances leading up to (the collapse) and whether all federal laws were followed."
  • Last week, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said investigators were looking in particular at the ship's electrical system. It appeared to be having issues, given videos showing the ship's lights going on and off, per the AP.
  • The Dali struck the bridge in the early morning hours of March 26 after leaving Baltimore's port bound for Sri Lanka. Six members of a roadwork crew plunged to their deaths.
