Affinity Water sends out letters to residents and businesses on closure of Thorley Street with incorrect dates

There’s confusion over the closure of a road in Bishop’s Stortford this week after a letter was sent to residents and businesses with the wrong dates.

Affinity Water sent a letter over the proposed closure of Thorley Street in Thorley indicating the road would be closed from Saturday (Apr 20) to next Wednesday (Apr 24) with work taking place between .

The letter stated only pedestrian access to properties and emergency access would be maintained during the works which are aimed at installing new pipework to connect nearby properties to the water network.

But after the Indie spotted the one-network internet platform only showed the road being closed on Saturday and Sunday (Apr 20-21) a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council confirmed it had only given Affinity permission to close it for those two days. Signs were also put up stating the road would be closed from Saturday to Sunday.

The spokesperson added Affinity Water would be contacted over the wrong date on the letter and added although the whole of the road will be closed with through traffic being diverted at the St James Way and Whittington Way junctions, vehicles will be able to access premises where work is not being carried out.

Sam Tanner, manager of The Coach and Horses pub along the road, said the closure would be a “bit of a nightmare”.

She added: It’s awful. If it’s the Sunday, that’s us done for.” Sam criticised Affinity for getting the dates wrong in the letter and also for the short notice as she only received the letter at the end of last week.

Sam continued: “Fingers crossed, but we could end up being really quiet.”
