Angel Di Maria blown away by £17m Aston Villa player yesterday

Angel Di Maria has lauded one Aston Villa player on social media following yesterday’s win at Arsenal.

Aston Villa became the first team to beat Arsenal in the Premier League in 2024.

Unai Emery’s side achieved the feat in convincing fashion, with goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins securing a 2-0 win.

The Villains delivered an accomplished away performance as they defended well when required while offering a real threat while going forward. But they had to rely on a few brilliant performances at the back after a difficult first half.

Indeed, Diego Carlos scooped the Player of the Match award after an ‘immense’ display at centre-back.

While Emiliano Martinez surprisingly had little to do on his return to the Emirates, the Argentine produced an exceptional save in the first half.

With the game on level terms, Leandro Trossard was denied by the 31-year-old’s outstretched right leg.

Di Maria sends message to Emiliano Martinez

Martinez took to Instagram after a huge win at Arsenal to express his delight at picking up three points in north London.

He wrote: “A HUGE win but we still have more to do!! Thank you to all the fans. We keep pushing for you!!”

His teammates Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne both left comments beneath the post.

Angel Di Maria replied with four fire emojis as he showed his appreciation for his compatriot.

Of course, Di Maria was part of the Argentine squad which lifted the World Cup back in December 2022.

Martinez played a key role in Qatar and has continued his excellent form between the sticks for Villa.

Martinez display vs Arsenal in numbers

While Villa were good value for their win in north London, the first half wasn’t exactly plain sailing.

Martinez was called into action on a few occasions and made four saves on the day.

The £17 million man also completed 42 of his 56 passes attempted as Villa began play through Arsenal’s press after the break.
