’The amount of times’: Jamie Carragher frustrated at Liverpool duo who kept passing to each other v Palace

Things seem to be getting worse for Liverpool after another damaging defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

This isn’t the norm for Jurgen Klopp because his teams usually are very strong at home, but in a blink of a flash, that’s back-to-back defeats.

The issue is that the performances aren’t deserving of any wins, with the likes of Crystal Palace and Atalanta getting on the ball and playing their game.

Added to that, fans can’t really blame the line-ups, it’s a strong team Klopp is putting out, so the performances and results should be better.

During the 1-0 defeat to Palace, Jamie Carragher noted a worrying trend that frustrated him and Liverpool as a whole.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were the duo who started at centre-back, with Joe Gomez on the bench, Joel Matip still injured and Jarell Quansah also absent.

But Carragher seemed to be annoyed by the ‘amount of times’ van Dijk and Konate just kept passing the ball to one another, as he told Sky Sports Premier League (14/04/24 at 3:50 pm).

It meant that the Reds weren’t progressing the ball forward as much as they liked and allowed Palace to remain in their shape without any worry.

“The amount of times van Dijk and Konate have passed the ball to each other,” said Carragher.

“A lot of that is down to the structure of Crystal Palace. It’s very difficult to play too.”

Liverpool’s defensive issues

A lot has been made of the attack and how chances after chances are being missed, fair enough!

From Darwin Nunez to Mohamed Salah, they deserve the stick they are getting, with it driving Michael Owen mad.

But the defence hasn’t been up to it either. That was certainly the case in the Europa League and it is still rearing its ugly head in the Premier League.

Yes, Liverpool fans will feel their team could and should have scored multiple goals on Sunday, but so should have their opponents.
