Garnacho and Antony uncertainty opens door for 19-year-old to make surprise FA Cup semi-final start

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could end up making a big call as the FA Cup semi-final approaches.

There are two themes underpinning Erik ten Hag‘s rollercoaster two years at Manchester United.

Firstly, his commitment to using young players has been refreshing, handing debuts to five academy prospects

Secondly, his strict discipline, which has seen him clash with those unable or unwilling to adhere to his demands, see Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

And after the events of the weekend, there could be a perfect storm upcoming for two youngs player in the lead-up to the FA Cup semi-final.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony uncertainty

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were key figures in Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool.

Antony scored a dramatic equaliser to force extra-time, while Garnacho provided the assist for the winner, and was involved in three of the four goals.

But following the draw with Bournemouth at the weekend, there is some uncertainty surrounding both players.

Antony was absent from the squad entirely, not among the players who travelled to the south coast.

It’s unclear what the problem was and why he was not involved, and whether he will be selected this forthcoming weekend.

Alejandro Garnacho did play, and was hooked at half-time. There was post-match controversy as Garnacho’s social media accounts then proceeded to ‘like’ comments which were critical of the manager.

The MEN reports this is a matter which will be ‘dealt with’ by United, prompting follow-up questions over whether he will be in the starting line-up at Wembley this coming weekend.

Alejandro Garnacho has been part of every single matchday squad this season, the only player at Manchester United to do so.

So while a stretch to expect he might be omitted, he might find himself on the bench if Erik ten Hag wants to make a point.

Omari Forson and Amad ready to step up

Erik ten Hag has options beyond Garnacho and Antony, starting with quarter-final match winner Amad.

Amad was Garnacho’s replacement at the weekend at half-time against Bournemouth, although may not have had the impact he desired.

The other option is to throw in Omari Forson, and given Ten Hag’s clear admiration of the young winger, this cannot be ruled out.

Forson was preferred as a starter to Amad in the Premier League earlier this year, and the manager has faith in the 19-year-old’s ability.

This decision would be a wildly controversial one, placing lots of pressure on Forson, and potentially upsetting Garnacho in the process.

But you can also see it happening, joining the dots. Forson has been a constant presence in the United squads in 2024 and has one first team assist.

Getting the start in the cup semi-final could be career changing if he takes advantage, and while a high risk choice from his manager, could end up being an inspired one.
