Celtic icon Martin O'Neill makes Scottish Premiership title call after Rangers slip-up

Celtic are in an encouraging position regarding the Scottish Premiership title race with just five matches left to play this term.

The Bhoys dispatched St Mirren in expert fashion last Saturday courtesy of goals from Reo Hatate, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Adam Idah, setting the scene for Rangers to travel to Dingwall the following day four points behind.

As we all know, Philippe Clement’s side were on the end of a 3-2 defeat to Ross County, which has left our gap at the summit intact ahead of the post-split fixtures being announced later this week.

Now, Celtic will prepare for three home games and two away encounters in the Scottish Premiership that are yet to be determined; regardless, we need to wait for Dundee vs Rangers to conclude on Wednesday before any official communication is set to be made on that front.

Brendan Rodgers won’t be applying too much concentration in the direction of developments elsewhere, given his men have a Scottish Cup semi-final to prepare for against Aberdeen on Saturday lunchtime.

Two domestic trophies remain up for grabs, and the Hoops will be determined to press home their advantage by fighting hard on both fronts for the remainder of the season.

Martin O’Neill makes Scottish Premiership title call

Former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill won three Scottish Premiership trophies at Parkhead and made some intriguing observations earlier today on the airwaves.

Speaking live on talkSPORT in the company of co-host pairing Simon Jordan and Jim White, the 72-year-old eluded to his old side’s upcoming Glasgow Derby being at home as a potentially decisive factor in the title race.

The former Republic of Ireland manager answered honestly when White asked if Celtic would land top spot this term.

He replied: “They’re in a great position now, a really great position. They’ve got the game with Rangers at home with all Celtic fans there, so it’s a difficult one for Rangers to overcome.”

Indeed, Celtic find themselves in a handy position heading towards the last five matches of the league campaign; nevertheless, title races can be fraught with unpredictability, which we need to guard against in the midst of our post-split fixtures.

Looking forward, it is now up to Rodgers and the group available to put in the requisite leg work to ensure we clinch first prize and automatic qualification for the new Champions League format.
