'Nightmare': Jamie Carragher says 30-year-old Everton player was absolutely awful tonight

Just when you think Everton have reached an all-time low and therefore cannot sink any deeper, they somehow find new and inventive ways of defying all expectations and disappointing their loyal fans.

And how loyal they must be, to have travelled all the way down to West London only to be served up such a torrid display.

Those who did make the journey deserve far more than a refund for their unwavering support in the face of such immeasurable misery…

There were few, if any positives to take from tonight’s abhorrent showing, and if there was to be an argument over performances it would be regarding who played the worst.

Well, Jamie Carragher certainly made his feelings known with one half-time comment.

Jamie Carragher was not happy with Jordan Pickford

Speaking live on Monday Night Football just before, the former Liverpool defender, who had previously offered his verdict on Everton’s awful takeover situation earlier in the night, turned his attention to the terrible first 45 minutes of football that the Toffees had just exhibited.

He was unsurprisingly scathing, as Cole Palmer was allowed to run riot, scoring his second hat trick at home in as many games.

Frustratingly enough, the goals were all gifted to him really aside from his first, a fine curled finish.

And at the heart of those mistakes was unfortunately Jordan Pickford, who has previously been so reliable for Sean Dyche.

Tonight he was not, as Carragher detailed: ‘Jordan Pickford has had a nightmare. He should have done better on that one [Palmer second] and I don’t know why he is trying to pass through Chelsea players on his right foot.

‘He has a great left foot but that’s the difference when you see a goalkeeper using his right foot and an outfield player using his right foot.’

Jordan Pickford’s Everton teammates did him no favours

Whilst his weak save for the second, and misplaced pass for the third were outstanding blunders, Pickford was hardly aided by his teammates out on the pitch.

After all, to a man, they were all abysmal, with nobody leaving Stamford Bridge with any accolades.

They defended wildly and without organisation, pressed in random moments which left so many gaps, and were as blunt as ever in attack.

Dyche must also take the brunt of the blame for his tactical setup, which all led to this massive letdown for the goalkeeper. He was poor tonight, but so was everyone else. The nightmare was not exclusive to the 30-year-old shot-stopper.
