American Idol star addresses host as 'Dad' in wild joke but real father is 'iconic'

American Idol star Kayko calls Ryan Seacrest his “Dad” – despite the host having no children – but it was a simple joke. His real father watched the singer’s audition from home with pride.

Kayko, a songwriter and producer from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, sang his original song called Over You. “You’re going to be a megastar!” Katy Perry said during his American Idol performance.

American Idol star Kayko’s REAL dad

Kayko’s real father is “iconic” and proudly watched his son’s audition from the comfort of their home. Sam “Kayko” Kelly-Cohen came to Idol as an accompanist for his friend, but then he stole the show!

When Kayko showed his real dad his Top 20 performance, he said, “There’s the Sam we know. You are an entertainer. You take over the stage, that’s what you do. You burn energy, you light the audience.”

“You crank them up. All these others are sitting there and they stand still,” before re-enacting other singers playing guitar. One fan wrote, “Bro this is iconic, so precious how proud he is of you truly.”

He calls Ryan Seacrest his ‘father’

Kayko even tagged Ryan Seacrest in his video of his real father as a joke, but actually referred to the host as his dad when he performed. He wrote on Instagram, “This is my real dad, not Ryan Seacrest.”

The singer added, “Ryan feel free to still legally adopt me I can have 2 dads.” Even a fan jokily commented, “How does your father feel about Ryan Seacrest being your dad?”

His musical father played drums

Kayko’s father played drums, inspiring Sam’s journey as a musician and singer-songwriter. The son-father duo went to Hawaii – where he accidentally auditioned for the show – with his late mom 10 years ago.

The musician dedicated original song, How to Live Without You, to his mom who passed away. Sam attended Berklee College of Music, refining his sound and his skills until tragedy struck.

His mom passed away in early 2019, and it shook his world. He started writing songs about liberation from sadness to help those who have experienced hardship.
