Ohio State transfer tracker: The spring portal window

(On3)

COLUMBUS — The NCAA’s Spring Transfer Portal window opened on Tuesday, April 16 and runs until April 30, a 14-day window that Ohio State could expected to be active in, even after it was so active during the winter window.

During the first portal window, which ran from December to January, the Buckeyes added seven players – all of whom took part in spring practices at Ohio State over the past two months.

The group of additions to the roster included former Kansas State starting quarterback Will Howard, former Alabama starting center Seth McLaughlin, former Alabama starting safety Caleb Downs, former Ole Miss All-SEC running back Quinshon Judkins, former Ohio tight end Will Kacmarek, former five-star quarterback — and Alabama signee — Julian Sayin and former Michigan walk-on linebacker Joey Velazquez.

Ohio State saw 18 players enter the NCAA Transfer Portal following the 2023 season. That group included the following offensive players: starting quarterback Kyle McCord, tight ends Sam Hart and Joe Royer, wide receivers Noah Rogers and Julian Fleming, running backs Chip Trayanum and Evan Pryor and offensive linemen Victor Cutler and Jakob James.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Buckeyes saw departures from defensive backs Cameron Martinez, Ryan Turner, Kye Stokes and Jyaire Brown, defensive end Omari Abor, defensive tackle Jaden McKenzie and linebacker Reid Carrico.

Special-team players Jesse Mirco, the team’s starting punter last year, and kicker Parker Lewis also left the program.

Spring transfer Portal window – Ohio State departures

Ohio State has already lost one member of its spring roster to the transfer portal.

Third-year running back Dallan Hayden, a Memphis, Tennessee native and graduate of Christian Brothers High School, will have three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop, wherever that ends up being, after he left the program last week.

He finishes his Ohio State career with 130 carries for 663 yards and six touchdowns. His best moment came during his freshman season, when he had 27 carries for 146 yards and three touchdown runs to power the Buckeyes over upset-minded Maryland. Hayden had two career 100-yard games for the Buckeyes, both coming during his freshman campaign. He redshirted last season and was slated to be the third tailback in the room behind Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson this fall.

NOTE: Ohio State currently sits at 85 scholarships, the exact number allowed by August. That number will change and fluctuate as the portal cycle continues during the next two weeks.

More on the NCAA’s Spring Transfer Portal window

The spring window runs for 14 days, but after a student-athlete is officially in the portal, there is no rush on making a decision as long as they are properly enrolled at a new institution in time for fall camp. Commitments do not have to be made during the two-week window. Graduate transfers are allowed to enter the portal at any time.
