‘Superb’: BBC pundit says £200k-a-week Man City player has been ‘incredibly impressive’ this season

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has heaped praise on one particular Manchester City player for his performances this season.

The Manchester club picked up a 5-1 win over Luton Town at the Etihad Stadium last weekend in their latest Premier League game, with four players getting their names on the scoresheet.

With the latest round of Premier League fixtures now over and done with, one City player has found themselves on the end of some heavy praise, not just for his recent display against the Hatters but also for his efforts across the entire season.

In his latest Team of the Week column shared on the BBC Sport website, Crooks had this to say about Josko Gvardiol including his recent goal-scoring efforts against Real Madrid and Luton Town.

He said: “He scored his first goal for the club at the Bernabeu in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in midweek and then along came his first Premier League strike against Luton Town just four days later.

“Both were quite superb, although the finish against Real Madrid would have carried far more significance.

“Nevertheless, the way the Croatia international has seamlessly slotted into the Manchester City set-up is incredibly impressive.

“Gvardiol’s success since he burst into the team has given City options. The full-back is as comfortable on the ball as Joao Cancelo was when he was occupying the position and seems just as capable of scoring goals.

“City, who went two points clear at the top of the table, now look ominous. With six league games left to play in the Premier League, a second Treble is still very much on the cards.”

Josko Gvardiol is having a top debut season at City

After scoring City’s third goal in last week’s 3-3 draw against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, the Croatain scored his second goal for the club in the 5-1 over Luton.

He also delivered the assist for Jeremy Doku’s goal in the win over Rob Edwards’s side.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from RB Leipzig during the previous summer transfer window in a deal worth £77m, the defender, who is picking up a weekly wage of £200k-per-week, has made 34 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions.

With 22 Premier League games now under his belt, the 22-year-old has racked up a higher combined total of tackles and interceptions (63) than any other defender in the squad.

Taking that into account, as well as Crook’s observation of how comfortable the defender is on the ball, it’s safe to say that the summer recruit is having a solid debut campaign with the Blues, which will hopefully end with some trophies being lifted.
