Norfolk residents without accepted identification urged to apply for free Voter ID before April 24, to be able to vote in local May elections

As the May elections are fast approaching, anyone without an accepted form of ID is being urged to apply online for a free one before the deadline.

Voters need to show photo ID in order to get their ballot paper for the local elections on May 2.

Residents can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate here by 5pm on April 24 as long as they are registered to vote and can provide their date of birth, National Insurance number and a photograph.

Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport, a UK or EEA driving licence, and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card meaning if you hold any of these, you do not need to apply.

Voters will also be able to use expired IDs if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Jackie Killeen, director of electoral administration and guidance at the Electoral Commission, said: “Voters will be required to show photo ID at polling stations at the May elections.

“The availability of free ID helps ensure elections remain accessible to all eligible voters.

“For those who don’t currently have the ID they need, it’s crucial they apply before the deadline so that they can cast their vote at the polling station.

“That date is fast approaching so don’t delay.”
