A man in Georgia has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for putting antifreeze in his baby’s breastmilk, according to authorities.
On Oct. 20, 2020, officers responded to the Children’s Health Care of Atlanta for a cruelty to children call, according to court documents obtained by WTGS-TV.
Hospital staff told officers that an 18-day-old baby tested positive for antifreeze in her system.
The baby’s mother told police she was in the hospital after giving birth and her mother was taking care of the baby. She gave 10 bags of breastmilk to the baby’s father, 48-year-old Curtis Jack, to take to her mother’s house.
She told police that she didn’t believe Jack nor her mother would poison the baby and had no clue how antifreeze got into her baby’s system.
Authorities talked with Jack, who initially denied putting antifreeze in the milk.
Court documents state he eventually said he did put the antifreeze in the baby’s milk. Detectives said, “Mr. Jack stated he did not want the child and he told [the mother] to get rid of the child. Mr. Jack did state he was remorseful for what he did.”
While Jack wanted the mother to have an abortion, she decided not to and had the baby anyway.
Police said the child did survive the incident and is now okay.

On April 11, 2024, Jack was convicted of attempted murder and cruelty to children, officials said.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison and once released, he will be on probation for another 10 years.
On April 15, Jack’s lawyers did file a motion asking for a new trial, claiming the state did not provide sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Jack was guilty. A judge has yet to rule on the motion.
